The art of timing: When to travel to South Korea
South Korea has four very distinct seasons, each of which transforms the peninsula into a completely different setting. Choosing the right time window is essential to defining the character of your trip. Here is our experts’ guide:
Main draw: The country’s chromatic rebirth and mild climate. In early April, the spectacular burst of cherry blossoms dyes cities, temples, and mountains in delicate pink and white. It is a perfect time to stroll through Seoul’s palaces or enjoy gentle hiking in Jeju.
Keep in mind: It is the high season. National and international demand skyrockets, especially during the bloom. Planning well in advance is imperative to secure the best private guides and the most sought-after suites in hanok accommodations.
Key dates: The Lotus Lantern Festival (Yeondeunghoe) in May, commemorating Buddha’s birthday. Central Seoul illuminates with hundreds of thousands of colorful paper lanterns in a magical parade full of spirituality.
Main draw: The landscapes reach a lush, bright green. It is a good time to enjoy the cities’ vibrant nightlife, seek refuge in the ocean breeze of Jeju Island, or explore the cool coasts of the peninsula’s east.
Keep in mind: The South Korean summer is very hot and humid. Between late June and July comes the Jangma (the summer monsoon season), bringing frequent and intense rains. We recommend prioritizing indoor experiences, museums, art galleries, and high-end wellness and spa retreats.
Key dates: The Boryeong Mud Festival (July), an effervescent and internationally known celebration, perfect for those seeking a fun and different experience on the Korean coasts.
Main draw: Considered by many as the most beautiful time to visit the country. The weather becomes cool and dry with deep blue skies. The Danpung (the changing colors of the leaves) sets mountainous landscapes like Seoraksan ablaze with vibrant shades of red, gold, and orange.
Keep in mind: Along with spring, it is the season of greatest splendor and highest demand. Traveling in autumn guarantees spectacular photography and exceptional thermal comfort, ideal for enjoying the open-air architecture and ancient gardens of Gyeongju.
Key dates: Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving), which usually falls in September. It is one of the most important national holidays. Many families travel, so traditions flourish, but transportation logistics require meticulous private organization, which we manage entirely.
